On Books and Drawing
I've been reading a bunch lately. I was on a British author kick for a while, between Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and Douglas Adams.
Douglas Adams co-wrote a book I think you all should read. It's called "Last Chance to See". I originally learned about it because I heard a recording of talk he gave in Germany some years back where he read some excerpts from it. It's about traveling to visit endangered animals around the world. Douglas Adams has such a way with words (and somehow ends up having astonishing transit shenanigans), that it kept me laughing out loud and dumbfounded throughout.
I've also discovered Larry Niven. I'd read "Ringworld" some years back, and am now diving into Mercutio's collection of books. First I devoured "Three Books of Known Space", and then "Flatlander". That one I particularly enjoyed, as it brought together my two favorite novel-types. Scifi(/fantasy) and detective. I can't believe I hadn't read it before now. After starting to read the next novel I came across, which was a collection of excerpts from other books, I became ensnared by pieces of "Lucifer's Hammer" and switched to that book (which, luckily, Merc also had). I couldn't put it down, most of the time. It's set about when it was written, in the 70's, and covers the lives of an array of people living through (or not) the discovery of a nearby comet and having it later impact the earth. Now I'm reading "Destiny's Road".
I've been making myself draw more. While I'm not trying to draw every night, I'm trying to most nights. I became addicted to a new sketchbook a couple months ago with perfect midtoned paper, not too textured, that allows me to drop in both shadows and highlights.
I'm thinking of starting a sketch blog, to help encourage me to keep up drawing. It might make sense to simply integrate something with my webpage's sketch section. I'll have to look into different blogging software out there to see what will work best (Steve may already have something implemented in his server I can just make use of). Or I'll just end up manually making new pages.
I also may start going to some of CCAE's Sunday morning life models. 9:30-1:30, $11. Anyone want to join me? I won't go too frequently. Maybe once a month, like Dr Sketchy's, or less. The poses only go from one minute to 15 minutes I think, though, which isn't as long as I'd prefer.
