I have Sunday and Monday to finish my dragon scales, and then need to decide if I should get postcards printed for Arisia, to try selling. Would enough people buy a postcard for $1 (or four for $3) to make it worthwhile? I can get 100 cards for $20 at Staples, and they'd even have a UV coating (teh awesome), but I'm assuming they'd all have to be the same image. If I wanna get all four dragons printed, it'd add up to $80. I could do smaller quantities I'm assuming, but would the cost be worthwhile? I may stop by and ask for a quote. I'd be cool if I knew I'd sell enough to break even, and use the rest as outreach to publishers, etc.
I think Staples prints pretty quick, so if I do my image editing during the week I should be able to print 'em Friday morning before going to Artist check-in. Any thoughts, my readers? I think one thing holding me back is that, like everyone, I'm short on funds. I feel like I shouldn't spend much. I'm telling myself I'll buy certain things for myself at the con if I see them, as I haven't really treated myself to any material goods recently (except "Last Chance to See", OMG, amazing book and you all need to read it).

Currently looking through the con schedule. Who's great idea was it to schedule "Art: Marketing Your Work" and "Art: Making a Living in a Creative Field" at the same time?? I mean, really. I know it's unavoidable sometimes when two panels I want to see are at the same time, but usually they don't have anything to do with each other. This one is a conflict. And for Mercutio, "Costuming: Historical Accuracy in costuming" and "Costuming: Live Steel". I think those are related enough that they ought not be at the same time, too.
I am looking forward to seeing Repo. With a bunch of geeks. And The Eye of Argon reading.

Arisia isn't making me super excited this year. I think it's just 'cause I feel like I haven't done much new art to show. And I don't have a Steampunk dress for the Steampunk Ball. My dress plan that I've been building on paper for a year is currently planned to be finished by PiCon instead. I need to stop being all anxious and just have fun. I'm sure I will! I just need to remind myself that before I get there.

In other news, after two types of antibiotics and a new vet as I heard bad things about the old as well as not having liked them, Guen has a bladder stone and is on dissolution formula. If all goes well, she'll be cured in a month, otherwise we look into surgery. She's taking it well.
I've heard of artists being able to wrangle up pet bill funds by selling art through word-of-mouth. I'll try that method if I have to cross that bridge. I should get Paypal and an Etsy page.

See you at Arisia... the panels don't look terribly exciting to me this year, but then I'm a hard science guy.

Thing one: Those Art panels do look like a bit of a screw-up, don't they. I'd email program@ (nicely!) and just call their attention to it. Things slip as panels get juggled, and hey, maybe nobody saw it.

Thing two: I'd buy postcards. Probably several. Especially if there's more than one image.

See you next weekend!

"Dear Programming, [...] Specifically I was surprised to find "Art: Marketing Your Work" and "Art: Making a Living in a Creative Field" in the same time slot. Extra surprising given that these are two of the only three art panels at all outside of the AGOH slots. [...] Thank you for your attention,"

"[...]I've just checked the mentioned program items. There is no overlap of participants for the "Marketing Your Work" and Making a Living in a Creative Field". [...] We do regular checks to see if panels are double-booked but on occasion something may be missed. Thank you for bringing this potential issue to our attention."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean that there were participant overlaps, but audience interest overlaps. I was indicating that I thought it was poorly planned to schedule them at the same time.
Especially for the art panels. There are only three "Art" panels for the whole weekend (not including the AGOH spots). And as an artist, I am interested in them. I would, for example, like to learn both how to "market my work" and "make a living", two closely related things. Having these two panels at the same time means I, and other people who are interested, will miss one of the only three that are happening. [...]"

I'd definitely buy postcards! Especially if they're dragons. :D

okittynoz! glad Guen is taking her meds well :)
what vet did you abandon and where are you going now? i went to CityCats in arlington and it was nice but not nice enough for the money.

though they did send me an ultracutez notecard for Xmas with kitties on it!

i hope you guys all have fun at arisia, i bet cheap postcards would do well. i've been wondering if i should make some picture magnets of my stuff but doubt i would have the gumption to make money from it (http://www.vistaprint.com/postcard-magnets.aspx?xnav=TsrItem&xnav=TsrItem)

ummmm i can't Believe that programs person misunderstood so hardcore. why in the world would you care if participants had booked themselves twice, how could that even be possible to begin with!! sad
